John and I are excited to be back with the ReFocus class again this year.
In the midst of a national election, big conventions, international problems, and large-scale economic indicators, we will ReFocus on the local communities that sustains us and that we sustain. As we said last week, we seek to find ways to discuss big, national issues in ways that do not alienate us from each other, which made me think of the Indigo Girls song posted above. We’re going to find those ways by focusing on community.
This fall, we will explore the qualities and components of strong communities, the ways we tear apart community, the passions and commitments we nurture in community, the bad habits and ruts we create in community, and the transformative work of community.
To get started tomorrow, we want you to be ready to describe a time you were in a community. How did you know it was a community? When were you with people but not in community? What was missing?
See you tomorrow @9:30.
