Hi all –
Here’s the text of a sermon by Lutheran minister Nadia Bolz-Weber. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/nadiabolzweber/2012/11/sermon-on-thanksgiving-at-pontius-pilates-moms-house-and-where-we-belong/#disqus_thread
In it she extrapolates from Jesus’s conversation with Pilate and muses on the the truth and how we can “belong to the truth,” as in,
“…What have you done?” 36Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” 37Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.” – John 18
What does Truth have to do with Thanksgiving at your house? Anything? What are you thankful for this year? How can you make this Thanksgiving more about giving thanks, and less about ________ [turkey, food, football, fill in the blank]?
She wraps up with this quote – separating our belongingness to God from our own inadequacies and everything else.
“Your belongingness to the truth is determined by the voice of the Christ who calls you by name in the mystery of the Eucharist and in the clumsiness of community and in every stranger who bears Christ’s face.”
In any case, you belong in Refocus – we’ll see you Sunday in the library at 9:30. Remember to bring canned goods. And there is a parish meeting after the 10:45 service – http://saintandrews.dioet.org/digital_faith/events/3158567
